Facial Acupuncture Rejuvenation

Cosmetic Acupuncture, also known as Facial Acupuncture Rejuvenation, is a remarkable non-surgical approach to combat the signs of aging. This ancient practice blends various acupuncture techniques, Chinese medical treatments, and herbal supplements from traditional Chinese medicine to achieve a youthful and radiant appearance. Unlike conventional cosmetic procedures, Cosmetic Acupuncture focuses on revitalizing the whole body, addressing physical, mental, and emotional imbalances that contribute to the aging process and overall health.

The underlying principle of Cosmetic Acupuncture lies in the belief that true beauty emerges from within. The visible effects of aging, such as wrinkles and sagging skin, can be attributed to imbalances in the body’s Qi (life energy), Blood, and Essence. By restoring harmony to these vital elements, a more vibrant and healthy appearance can be attained.
On a physiological level, acupuncture enhances blood circulation and the flow of life energy throughout the body. This increased blood flow nourishes the skin and muscles, providing moisture, nourishment, and a natural “lifting” effect.
The acupuncture process also targets collagen and elastin production, essential proteins responsible for the skin’s resilience and elasticity. Factors like sun exposure and aging can reduce the body’s natural production of collagen and elastin. By stimulating cell reproduction and growth, acupuncture promotes the production of these vital proteins, resulting in firmer, more toned skin. The insertion of needles into specific muscle motor points helps re-educate the muscles, leading to a more sculpted, youthful, and lifted appearance.
Compared to Botox, Cosmetic Acupuncture offers a safer and more natural alternative. Botox only addresses dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contractions, while Cosmetic Acupuncture tackles wrinkles due to aging and sun exposure. Additionally, Botox can pose risks like muscle paralysis and upper eyelid droop, and its effects are temporary, requiring frequent and costly touch-ups. On the other hand, Cosmetic Acupuncture offers long-lasting results without dangerous side effects.

Cosmetic Acupuncture Treatment

A typical course of Cosmetic Acupuncture comprises 10-14 consecutive treatments, with sessions twice a week over 5-7 weeks. While visible results may be noticeable after a few sessions, a full course ensures deeper and longer-lasting benefits. After completing the initial course, maintenance sessions, usually occurring monthly for 2-3 months and then seasonally, can prolong the results.
Rejuvenating Acupuncture not only enhances physical appearance but also addresses the interconnected nature of body, mind, and spirit. Negative emotions and stress can manifest in the face, affecting skin texture, color, and tension. By reducing stress and promoting overall well-being, Cosmetic Acupuncture helps individuals not only look younger but also feel more youthful and revitalized.

Scar Reduction Therapy

Aside from its cosmetic applications, Cosmetic Acupuncture also offers Scar Reduction Therapy. This technique uses needles to break down scar tissue, reducing its size and thickness, resulting in a smoother, more natural appearance. Patients with various types of scars, including surgery scars, trauma scars, and keloid scars, can benefit greatly from this therapy.

Cosmetic Acupuncture Sessions

Typically last over an hour, while sessions including facial treatments may extend to 1 1/2 hours. It involves the insertion of fine acupuncture needles into specific areas throughout the body while the patient relaxes on a treatment table, fully clothed. After the needles are in place for 20-30 minutes, patients experience a relaxing and euphoric feeling, often leading to improved sleep and reduced stress.
The effects of Cosmetic Acupuncture are cumulative and can last up to 3-5 years after completing a course of 10 treatments, with regular maintenance sessions. While each patient’s experience may vary, the benefits extend beyond cosmetic improvements, encompassing enhanced overall health, hormonal balance, improved digestion, metabolism, and a strengthened immune system.
Cosmetic Acupuncture is a suitable option for individuals aged 20 to 55 years, and even younger individuals can benefit from the preventive effects to delay the aging process. However, patients with certain medical conditions, such as hemophilia, pacemakers, uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, severe migraines, and pregnant women, are not candidates for Cosmetic Acupuncture.
In conclusion, Cosmetic Acupuncture is a comprehensive and natural approach to achieve a youthful and radiant appearance. By harmonizing the body’s energy and addressing both physical and emotional aspects, it not only erases years off the face but also enhances overall health and well-being. Through a personalized treatment plan and the cumulative effects of acupuncture, individuals can enjoy lasting improvements, maintaining their innate beauty for years to come.

Q How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, these points lie along meridians, which are pathways through which vital energy, called "Qi" (pronounced "chee"), flows. The goal of acupuncture is to restore the balance and flow of Qi within the body, thus promoting health and alleviating various conditions.

While the traditional explanations are rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy, modern scientific understanding of acupuncture involves several mechanisms:

Neurotransmitter Release: Inserting needles into specific points stimulates sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles. This stimulation triggers the release of various neurotransmitters, such as endorphins (natural painkillers) and serotonin (a mood regulator), which can contribute to pain relief and improved mood.
Pain Gate Theory: Acupuncture may influence the "gate control" theory of pain. By stimulating sensory nerves, acupuncture can essentially close the "pain gates" along the neural pathways, reducing the perception of pain signals from other parts of the body.
Blood Flow and Circulation: Needle insertion and manipulation can affect blood flow and microcirculation in the local area. This can enhance the delivery of nutrients, oxygen, and immune cells to the treated area, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.
Connective Tissue Stimulation: Acupuncture can stimulate connective tissue and fascia. These tissues play a crucial role in transmitting mechanical signals throughout the body. Stimulating them may have far-reaching effects on various bodily functions.
Central Nervous System Modulation: Acupuncture can influence the central nervous system's processing of pain signals and overall regulation of bodily functions. This can involve both local effects (at the needle insertion site) and systemic effects.
It's important to note that while acupuncture has gained popularity and recognition for certain conditions, its efficacy is still a topic of ongoing research and debate in the medical community. Some studies have shown positive outcomes for pain management, nausea reduction (e.g., in chemotherapy patients), and certain other conditions. Acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by trained’ practitioners using sterile needles.

Q What is Qi?

n traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), "Qi" (pronounced "chee") is a fundamental concept that refers to the vital life force or energy that flows throughout the body and the universe. Qi is believed to be the underlying force that sustains all living things and is responsible for maintaining health and balance.

In TCM theory, Qi flows through pathways called meridians or channels, which connect various parts of the body. These meridians are associated with specific organs and functions, and the balance and harmonious flow of Qi within these meridians are essential for good health.

There are different types of Qi in TCM, each with its own specific role:

Yuan Qi: This is the fundamental Qi that is inherited from one's parents and is related to overall constitution and vitality. It is often associated with the energy stored in the kidneys.
Zong Qi: Also known as "gathering Qi," this type of Qi is derived from the air we breathe and the food we consume. It is transformed in the lungs and is responsible for providing energy to the body's organs and systems.
Zhen Qi: This is the Qi derived from the transformation of Zong Qi in various organs and tissues. It is responsible for the specific functions of these organs and for maintaining bodily processes.
Wei Qi: Often referred to as "protective Qi," Wei Qi is associated with the immune system and plays a role in defending the body against external pathogens.
The concept of Qi is deeply ingrained in traditional Chinese medical philosophy and serves as the basis for diagnosis and treatment in TCM. Acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary practices, and other TCM modalities aim to restore the balance and proper flow of Qi within the body, promoting health and preventing disease.

It's important to note that while the concept of Qi is integral to traditional Chinese medicine, it differs significantly from Western scientific understandings of energy. In modern scientific terms, there is no direct equivalent to the concept of Qi, and its explanations often involve philosophical and metaphorical elements that may not align with conventional medical understanding.

Q Is Acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points on the body, and the sensation experienced during the procedure can vary from person to person. Here are some factors to consider regarding the potential pain associated with acupuncture:

Sensitivity: People have different levels of sensitivity to pain. Some individuals may barely feel the needles being inserted, while others might experience mild discomfort or a slight pinch.
Needle Size: Acupuncture needles are very thin, much thinner than the needles used for injections or blood draws. Their small size often contributes to a less painful experience. My needles are some of the thinnest available.
Needle Insertion: As a trained acupuncturists I insert needles gently and precisely, minimizing discomfort. Some insertion points might be more sensitive than others, but the sensation is generally brief.
Deqi Sensation: In traditional Chinese medicine, the sensation of "Deqi" is often sought during acupuncture. Deqi is described as a sensation of dullness, heaviness, tingling, or a mild ache around the needle insertion site. While Deqi is not necessarily painful, it can be surprising for those who are not familiar with the sensation.
Pain Tolerance: Individuals with a higher pain tolerance might find acupuncture to be relatively painless, while those with lower pain tolerance might experience more discomfort.
After Sensation: After the needles are inserted, some people may feel a mild ache or tingling around the insertion points. This sensation typically subsides quickly.
Relaxation and Mindset: Being relaxed and having a positive mindset can influence your perception of pain during acupuncture. Some people find the experience quite relaxing and even enjoyable.
It's important to communicate openly with me about your comfort level and any concerns you might have. As a skilled practitioner I will take your preferences and sensitivities into account and can adjust your treatment accordingly. Overall, many people find acupuncture to be a relatively gentle and well-tolerated procedure, but individual experiences can vary. If you're considering acupuncture and are worried about pain, discussing your concerns with me, I can help you make an informed decision.

Q What is Face Reading?

Navigating the Depths of Face Reading in Traditional Chinese Medicine

The practice of face reading, deeply embedded in the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), offers unique insights into an individual's constitution, health, and emotional well-being. Let’s dive into the world of face reading within the context of TCM, exploring its fundamental principles and key insights that draw from the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

The Essence of Face Reading in TCM

Face reading, or "Mian Xiang," is an intricate practice rooted in the belief that the face serves as a mirror reflecting the inner harmony or imbalances within the body. In TCM, the face is considered a map where different facial features, colors, and qualities correspond to the body's internal energies and organs. By carefully observing these features, TCM practitioners gain valuable insights into an individual's health, personality traits, and potential areas of concern.

Key Concepts and Insights

The Five Elements: Central to TCM's philosophy, the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) play a pivotal role in face reading. Each element is associated with specific facial attributes and energies. The balance or imbalance of these elements within the face can indicate the overall health and constitution of an individual.
Yin and Yang Balance: In TCM, the harmony between Yin (substance) and Yang (function) is crucial for optimal well-being. Face reading involves assessing the distribution of Yin and Yang energies in different facial areas, shedding light on potential imbalances or areas of strength.
Three Treasures: The Three Treasures – Jing (Essence), Qi (Vital Energy), and Shen (Spirit) – are fundamental to TCM's understanding of the body and mind. The expressions of these treasures are mirrored in various facial features, offering insights into an individual's vitality, emotional state, and overall balance.
Insights from Facial Features

Forehead: The forehead is believed to reflect one's life path and intentions. A broad upper forehead might signify a person who values intellect and thought, while a strong lower forehead could indicate determination and practicality.
Eyes: Often referred to as the "windows to the soul," the eyes reveal emotional tendencies and personality traits. The shape, size, and positioning of the eyes can provide insights into an individual's emotional nature and relationships.
Nose: The nose is thought to be a mirror of both physical health and emotional tendencies. Different parts of the nose correspond to different life stages, offering glimpses into one's past, present, and future experiences.
Mouth and Lips: The mouth and lips offer insights into communication styles and nourishment. The shape and expressions of the lips can indicate emotional states, while the mouth's corners reveal aspects of interpersonal relationships.
Cheeks and Jawline: The cheeks are said to reflect a person's social interactions and relationships. The jawline, on the other hand, is associated with determination, personal boundaries, and the integration of various aspects of life.

The art of face reading within Traditional Chinese Medicine is a profound practice that unveils the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit. By delving into the insights offered by the various facial features, TCM practitioners gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's constitution and well-being. While the practice is deeply rooted in ancient wisdom, its principles continue to resonate in today's quest for holistic health and self-awareness.

I am planning a face reading workshop in October.

My go to in Cape Town

I recently moved here and one of the first places I looked for was Accupuncture. I’ve traveled all over so I’ve had many acupuncturists and I didn’t have to look far! He was the first one I found and when I went, I got instant results. I also took my mom and she did as well. I’m grateful I found him.

So happy to have found Gideon

I have been searching for a holistic healer for a long time as I am usually a healthy person, but have recently been suffering from ill health. I was sick and tired (excuse the pun!) Of being prescribed one pill after the other treating the symptoms and not getting better. I had my first treatment with Gideon and it was like coming home. His open and honest demeanour, his skill, gentle understanding and guidance instill trust and calmness.

A true healer who honors your healing journey, moment by moment.

Gideon is the first acupuncturist I worked with in Cape Town, and I was pleasantly surprised that I never caught the sight of his clinic until an Uber driver dropped me off in front of his clinic gate, as if by divine synchronicity that day, next to a physio therapist I was working with next door to him: my treatments with him were holistic, some benefits I received were beyond the scope of acupuncture alone, such as his listening skills to my concerns during each visit; Gideon listened with eyes, ears, and heart, he is a healer with the insights to offer to his patients, as well as truth and compassion to share at his treatment table each time with clients that seek his help and guidance. I highly recommend Gideon to anyone who is new to the ancient healing art of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Gideon is fully equipped with the wisdom of TCM to fully assess each client’s condition, the kind of help he or she truly needs at that moment, and he knows how to honor the healing journey of an individual, moment by moment.

Superb acupuncturist & Incredibly beneficial treatment!

Gideon is quite a unique bundle! His immediately congenial approach dispels the austere quality his white lab coat emits. Once you’re in his care, it’s all about you. He invites you into a safe, gentle, and relaxed space so you feel comfortable sharing your story at the deepest level. Then he takes you through an insightful and thorough process to boost you back to wellbeing, with the added bonus that you also learn so much each time. So far, I’ve only experienced his acupuncture treatment, which has been spot on each time (excuse the pun), in that what he says will happen or shift – actually does. This really helps build trust between patient and practitioner. And, since I believe true healing really happens from within, I feel it is most especially activated when one’s practitioner helps you believe it too. This is what Gideon excels at. I am excited to see how the face rejuvenation practice works, and look forward to attending both his upcoming Qi Gong and Tai Chi classes. After all TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is a holistic approach to healing.
