What is Qi Gong?
Qi Gong (also spelled Qigong) is an ancient Chinese practice that combines movement, breathwork, and meditation to cultivate and balance Qi—the vital life force that flows through all living beings. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), martial arts, and Daoist philosophy, Qi Gong is designed to enhance physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual awareness. It is often described as a moving meditation, as its slow, intentional movements synchronize with deep breathing and focused awareness, helping to clear energy blockages and restore harmony within the body.
The practice of Qi Gong is based on the belief that illness and discomfort arise when Qi becomes stagnant, deficient, or unbalanced. By performing gentle yet powerful exercises, practitioners encourage the free flow of energy through the meridians—the same energy channels used in acupuncture. Regular practice has been shown to improve circulation, boost immunity, reduce stress, and support overall vitality. It is also widely used for pain relief, mental clarity, and emotional balance.
Qi Gong includes many different styles, ranging from dynamic forms that build strength and endurance (such as Martial Qi Gong) to softer, meditative forms that focus on healing and relaxation (Medical Qi Gong). Some practices emphasize visualization, guiding energy through the body with the mind, while others incorporate sound vibrations or acupressure techniques.
Unlike strenuous exercise, Qi Gong and Tai Ji is accessible to people of all ages and abilities, as it is low-impact and adaptable. Whether practiced in a group, alone, or as part of a healing journey, Qi Gong connects the practitioner with the rhythms of nature, fostering a deep sense of inner peace and balance. Through regular practice, Qi Gong becomes more than just an exercise—it becomes a way of life, harmonizing body, mind, and spirit.

A typical Qi Gong class involves:
- Warm-up: Gentle stretches to loosen muscles and joints.
- Primary Practice: Slow, graceful movements synchronised with breathing techniques. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring your body is in constant motion.
