Breathing (Pranayama) is the foundation of yoga, helping to regulate the nervous system and enhance lung capacity. Conscious breathing techniques, such as deep diaphragmatic breathing or alternate nostril breathing, can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve focus. By bringing awareness to the breath, pranayama helps cultivate a sense of inner calm, making it easier to manage anxiety and emotional fluctuations.
Stretching in yoga improves flexibility, mobility, and circulation. Unlike static stretching, yoga postures (asanas) engage both strength and flexibility, promoting joint health and preventing injuries. Regular practice releases tension stored in the muscles, particularly in areas prone to tightness, such as the shoulders, hips, and lower back. As the body becomes more supple, pain and stiffness decrease, leading to better posture and overall movement.
Mindfulness is at the heart of yoga, encouraging present-moment awareness and self-acceptance. By focusing on breath and movement, yoga practitioners develop a heightened sense of body awareness and mental clarity. This mindfulness reduces stress, enhances emotional resilience, and promotes a sense of peace. Studies have shown that mindful movement through yoga can improve concentration, boost mood, and support mental well-being.
Child’s Pose (Balasana): A Restorative Yoga Posture
Child’s Pose, or Balasana, is a gentle and grounding yoga posture that promotes relaxation and deep release. It involves sitting back on the heels with the forehead resting on the mat and arms extended forward or relaxed by the sides. This pose stretches the spine, hips, and shoulders while relieving tension in the lower back and neck.
Beyond its physical benefits, Child’s Pose encourages deep breathing and mindfulness, helping to calm the nervous system and reduce stress. It gently compresses the abdomen, aiding digestion, while also improving circulation to the brain, fostering mental clarity.
Often used as a resting position during yoga practice, Balasana is a safe and nurturing posture suitable for all levels. Whether used for relaxation, recovery, or emotional grounding, Child’s Pose invites a sense of surrender, making it a powerful tool for both physical and mental well-being.

I have been doing yoga on Camps Bay beach with Elaine for 4/5 years now, and can vouch for her as my favourite yoga teacher, ever! As a pilates teacher I am very particular about movement and the benefits of every move. Elaine always hits the spot!. She has an ability to read the needs of her class, and it is always an inspiring and very varied hour of utter bliss!
Beautiful setting, in a beautiful part of Cape Town in the corner of Camps Bay Beach. Not your typical yoga class of repetitive vinyasas, but a mixture of balance and stretching, delivered in an informative, comprehensive, meaningful manner, focused on the student.
As a yoga newby, I finally connected to what this artform and philosophy is all about out. Elaine clearly showed me how this area of holistic welllbeing is meant to be about. Thank you.
Elaine holds classes on the beach at camps bay and I cannot think of a better way to start the day. Year after year I come back to attend her classes when I visit Cape Town. My last class was especially unforgettable with the misty morning at the beach and the smell of the ocean, it was a truly mystical experience. I especially enjoy Elaine’s teaching style. She has evolved over the years to include more chi gong and tai chi movements between poses and therefore transitions became as essential and the asanas. I always leave the class feeling the life force buzzing in my body and light hearted with gratitude. Palm tree over my head, sound and the smell of the ocean, mountain in the background and grass under my feet with amazing yoga over joys me. The energy is unmatched! Try it.
Elaine’s teaching style is supportive, gentle, and very focused. You are left feeling relaxed and yet invigorated. Being near the ocean adds another calmness to the practice. This is such a treat to practice in these surroundings. I have attended a local & an international retreat which were both amazing. If you are thinking about the Greece retreat this year, do it! It is a magical place. Thank you for being such an inspirational teacher.
Elaine is amazing. Truly. Her retreat to Italy was nothing short of life altering when I needed it most. From her careful planning of venue, to outings in the surrounds, the little gifts and most amazing people, you can be assured of the trip of a lifetime. If you find yourself thinking, it’s self indulgent, well maybe that’s just what you need. Some time to indulge and delve into you, guided by this phenomenal woman in a place of utter beauty.
Elaine doesn’t just teach yoga! Her retreat in South Africa was wonderfully healing and so well considered! From the mental wellness to the beautiful setting, the delicious and wholesome meals, the community, and the varied classes – from vinyasa flow to the more targeted sessions around alignment, strength and stretching, as well as the breathwork, and meditation! We left feeling healed, relaxed and aligned! I also love her outdoor classes overlooking the best views that the city of Cape Town has to offer! Highly recommend!
Elaine gives the most amazing and tranquil classes, that leave you feeling refreshed and ready to take on the rest of your day. She pays so much attention to detail and I love the care she gives to readjustments with all her students. Her classes are for all levels and can definitely be challenging if that’s what you are looking for but also not too challenging if you are a beginner and don’t want to push yourself. All in all an amazing teacher and overall experience
Just done one of Elaine’s classes on the beach. I left floating on air! Elaine is such an enthusiastic, intuitive teacher. She gives personal attention and adjustments to everyone. She caters for all levels. And her classes just flow seamlessly. The location is the icing on the cake. To be able to practice yoga to the sound of the ocean, to feel the sun on your skin and the gentle breeze is about as good as it gets. I would recommend Elaine’s classes in a heartbeat. As for her retreat, you must go! I was am so fortunate to have gone last year. It was amazing from the moment we arrived until we bade our sad farewells. Elaine’s teaching was inspirational. She is unfailingly attentive, enthusiastic and supportive. The venue is very special with a beautiful shala, a gorgeous swimming pool, delicious food and in walking distance of the beach and the picturesque town of Molyvos. Elaine also included some great trips and activities during the week. I especially loved the boat trip. And what a beautiful group of people we had. It was a truly magical, transformative and uplifting experience. If you can, you must go. You won’t regret it!
She gives personal attention to each person. And adapts herself to the level of the class. She is graceful and shows how each exercise should be performed.
Elaine is simply one of the best yoga teachers, whether online, on the beach or in a class. The perfect way to start or end a day, with her beautiful enegy and flow.
Elaine is simply one of the best yoga teachers I have practised with. Inventive, intuitive, stretching , omniscient, emphatic, and full of joy. Take a class. And experience what Elaine brings to yoga .
Elaine is a beautiful guide, that keeps on giving. I have been lucky to participate in both of her retreats and joined her practice is cape town. She works you in your deepest levels. I cant recommend her enough. Everything she does is with deep care. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Elaine is just incredible….her classes will leave you feeling Positive energetic and rebalanced She us hugely knowledgeable and an amazing person that will guide you gently through your practice You can also join Elaine on her wonderfully organised retreats Such a genuinely beautiful spul
Elain’es yoga classes are amazing because she is a very detailed teacher who can really explain what you should do with each tiny part of your body so that you improve all the time. Whereas most other intructors just call out poses and rush through movements, Elaine really helps you to grow and develop your yoga practice. Having said all that, the best part of her classes is that, with the sound of the wind and the sea, the feel of the grass beneath your feet and incredible views of the sea and the mountain, she guides you through vinyasa flows in a way that you can reach a flow state, joining mind and body.
Oh my, what an incredible experience doing yoga outside, on the grassy patch adjacent to Camps Bay beach. It was a really wonderful flowy class with twists and stretches and strengthening. Elaine has a unique flow that is seamless. I hardly noticed the time going by.
