ACNE – natural cures to treat acne
Acne vulgaris, typically known as acne has a combination of causes. This article looks as natural cures to treat acne from diet to vitamin supplementation to hormone regulation, aromoatherapy and more. Acne is common in ages between 11 and 30 particularly teenage years. Adult acne is often considered hormonally generated. Hormones along with genetic factors, diet, bacteria, skin cell abnormalities and stress are causes to be addressed. Medication alongside diet can play a progressive role in clearing the symptoms. Here are some of the natural interventions and cures useful in treating acne.
ACNE – natural cures to treat acne: DIET
Controlling sugar spikes goes a long way towards preventing symptoms. Following a low G.I diet (glycemic index) means choosing foods that do not raise your blood sugar levels too quickly. High G.I foods are sugar, processed wheat, like bread, pasta and pastries; sweets, ice-cream and sugary cereals. High sugar foods increase insulin. This is a hormone that moves sugar from the blood into the cells. It encourages the release of other hormones like IGF-1). This causes increased hyerkeratinisation and excess sebum (oil) production in the glands which can worsen acne. Dairy products have also been proven to agitate acne.
A high nutrient menu with anti-inflammatory food is preferential. Stick to organic fruit and vegetables, whole grains like brown rice, oats and buckwheat, plant based dairy alternatives like almond or oat milk and nut cheeses; legumes like chick peas, beans, lentils and use anti-inflammatory herbs like turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, parsley, garlic, ginger and cayenne.
Drink unsweetened beverages like lemon water, herb tea, green tea and water.
EATING ACCORDING TO YOUR TEMPERAMENT:
What is often overlooked is eating according to your temperament. Not everyone is suited to eating cold food or raw food. Your temperament may suit warmer foods. Browse our article section to determine your temperament and eat in accordance with your individual disposition.
WATER:
If you find it hard to drink water, try drinking warm water. For some, warm water is more suited to their temperament. You can add a squeeze of lemon, mint or ginger. Keep a flask of warm water and resolve to drink it all throughout the day.
VITAMINS:
A lack of vitamin D has been pinpointed as a cause for acne. If you are low in vitamin D, then supplementing with good quality vitamin D will show good results in resolving acne.
Other supplements to consider are: fish oil (Omega-3), B-Vitamins, Zinc, Barberry (berberis vulgaris) due to its anti-inflammatory properties, probiotics and certain doses of CBD.
HOMEOPATHY:
Calcarea sulphurica is a suggested for juvenile acne that suppurates and causes boils.
Calendula Gel applied topically on the infected areas stimulates healing of pustules and limits the risk of superinfection.
Hepar sulphuris calcareum is a remedy specifically for pustular acne aggravated by cold weather.
AROMATHERAPY OILS:
Remember to dilute pure oils in a carrier oil like almond before application. Then blend 1 drop of chosen oil with 10 drops of carrier oil, dip an ear bud or cotton swab into the oil and dab gently on individual pimples. Leave on for 30 minutes. Aromatherapy is a safe natural cure to treat acne.
Clary sage is anti-bacterial and reduces stress. It is good to prevent the spread of acne as it helps reduce sebum production.
Lemongrass, oregano, tea tree and rosemary are all anti-bacterial and reduce inflammation.
Thyme is also anti-bacterial.
