Founder of the Water Initiation Ceremony:
The founder of the Earth School, Glen Nangaku, has spent over 35 years learning from zen masters, indigenous shamans and psychotherapists in order to embody and share these wisdoms with community. As an ordained Zen Priest, initiated shaman & elder and seasoned spiritual quest-seeker and traveller, Glen’s mission is to help spiritual students in their journey of reclaiming their authenticity by connecting to their inner and outer state of naturalness. This water initiation ceremony seeks to carry those values through intentional teaching.
Location:
Umami (Mother Earth’s secret ingredient) is situated in the majestic mountains of Franschhoek in the Western Cape and offers excellent facilities where Earth School students can gather and deepen their connection to themselves, each other and sacred nature. Umami has opened recently and is hosted by the Heart Quest Foundation – a non-profit organisation, founded in 2012 to provide nature based healing programs that promote self help, self awareness and self empowerment.
We are honoured to be invited to retreat at this beautiful location which honours nature. All accommodation fees paid to Umami Mountain Retreat are used to fund the Foundation’s nature based programs for at risk South African youth and disadvantaged communities. Participating in a retreat through Earth School and Umami Mountain Retreat benefits the broader community with a circular, sustainable and human development ethic. Participating in this water initiation ceremony will help with this community initiative.
The Food:
Delicious plant-based meals (vegetarian) are prepared by our wonderful chefs. Ingredients are locally sourced, fresh and where possible, organic. All meals are cooked with love using whole foods and are free of preservatives, additives and refined sugar. A weekend menu can be pre-selected from a series of options provided from our chef.
A typical Earth School retreat begins on Friday afternoon with an opening circle and evening meal. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner is served on Saturday. Departure is on Sunday after the closing circle and a celebratory brunch.
More about Earth School Weekend Retreats:
Earth School Weekend Retreats are a great way to introduce yourself to the earth-based spiritual work being made available to you. We work with one Earth’s 5 elemental bodies as we progress through the concept of the Earth School Medicine Wheel where we investigate its medicine and how it constellates in you. An opportunity for learning about what is being revealed and what to do to bring your body and consciousness into balance with earth’s body of consciousness is presented in this sacred space. This seeks to generate vital senses of self awareness, abundance, healing and purpose.
Over the weekend, we engage in number of gateways to connect with each other and the elemental body. There are periods of rest, meditation, silence, medicine talks, movement & ritual ceremony. The weekend is imbued with the medicine of the element we are working with. Due to the very nature of the work and the influence of those present, no two retreats are ever the same.
Weekend Retreats follow the arc of the mythological quests:
Departure – we consciously prepare for the journey ahead and begin; Threshold & Trial – we are tested and asked to surrender what is familiar to receive the gift of growth; we then return to the threshold of Homecoming where we clarify what we are bringing home and why? And finally Arrival – we are welcomed back into community.
