CREATE HONOURING RITUALS
Looking more deeply at the adage we throw around so often, the one that says, ‘true beauty comes from within’ we see that adding mindfulness and self-love is the primary ingredient we need for beauty. Whatever creams and balms or rituals we apply, the first place to start is to create honouring rituals and make a commitment to ‘love yourself as fiercely as you do other people’.
We look at 3 ‘beauty ingredients’ to help in this approach.
1. Consider Your Body – CREATE HONOURING RITUALS
More than anything else, giving yourself time, we’re talking unhurried time – does anyone even know what that is anymore – to settle into ourselves and be aware of our body, our needs and to establish rituals. Creating a space where you can be in touch with yourself, have a long bath, notice your body and the changes it goes through, connect with the different cycles and make allowances for resting. See what your body is asking of you, make friends with the roundness of your belly, give the aches some attention and nurture the parts of your skin that are in protest. So often, we disown the parts of ourselves we disapprove of. Bring them back into favour and spend some time on them.
2. Tune into Healing Plants
Rather than simply slathering on products, being cognisant of the herbs, flowers and therapeutic innovations we use and thanking the earth for delivering such power to us will add mindfulness and pleasure to our applications. Know what is in the products you are using and connect with the core constituents. For instance:-
CHAMOMILE, we all know this flower, can grow it in our gardens and even decant our own beauty balm from it. It is known to fade pigmentation and provide a youthful glow.
ROSE PETALS are said to lock in moisture and provide a calming fragrance that soothes irritated skin.
TURMERIC is celebrated for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties, proficient at healing, tonifying and calming your skin.
CALENDULA repairs dry skin, removes fungal infections and reduces acne scars or wounds.
WITCH HAZEL is a natural astringent, a cure-all for troublesome skin helping fade scars and speed up healing of inflamed skin.
ALOE VERA is famed for its anti-inflammatory properties, keeping skin calm, hydrated and plump. It has great enzymatic action on hair and helps with hair growth.
SAGE is rich in antioxidants that help reverse signs of aging, like age spots, and fine lines.
ASHWAGANDHA used internally and externally is a true elixir promoting antioxidant activity and reversing nerve cell damage from free radicals, it also helps the body produce natural skin oils.
Knowing what you are putting onto your face and connecting with the healing power of the plant adds to the intentional value. You may even want to make your own healing creams
using base oils or butters like coconut, almond, jojoba, cacao or shea and CREATE HONOURING RITUALS.
"you are a soul. a world. a portal. a spirit. you are never alone. you are organs and blood and flesh and muscle. a colony of miracles weaving into each other." - Rupi Kaur
3. CREATE HONOURING RITUALS
Whether it is skin brushing, face rolling, meditating, facial massage, oil pulling, steaming or simply cleansing and hydrating, have a ritual where you are aware of nourishing
your body. Consider making a date with yourself at least once a week to honour your body and apply your favourite treatment.
Famed Indian actress Priyanka Chopra uses a DIY mask twice a week. Mixing chickpea flour, yogurt, lemon, whole milk, sandalwood powder, and turmeric, she applies it and allows it to dry before washing it off. Lighting a candle, playing meditative music and burning holy wood can enhance the experience of allowing yourself some care.
